Under Armour Selects AWS as Its Preferred Cloud Provider for SAP Environments
November 2021

Under Armour selects AWS as its primary cloud provider

One of the world’s leading athletic performance brands moves business-critical SAP workloads to AWS to increase reliability and scalability, and accelerate digital transformation, increase resilience, enhance security, and provide more significant insights across its business. The athletic performance brand completed the migration of its SAP environments to AWS earlier this year, providing the foundation for improving performance and visibility across its design, merchandising, planning, manufacturing, supply chain, and sales distribution channels. Under Armour will now integrate its SAP environments with AWS’s broad and deep set of technologies, including analytics, machine learning, compute, and storage. Powered by the world’s leading cloud, this modernization brings a range of AWS capabilities to fuel innovation in areas like 3D apparel and footwear design, digitally connected footwear and apparel, resource-efficient production, direct-to-consumer sales, and global wholesale distribution. “With SAP in the cloud, we can now apply deep analytics and machine learning capabilities to drive greater efficiency across our business. With AWS, we are optimizing our product innovation processes to deliver premium consumer experiences wherever and whenever our customers choose to engage our brand.” AWS is a critical element of our digital transformation, and we look forward to harnessing its industry-leading cloud capabilities as we enter our next stage of growth. With SAP in the cloud, we can now apply deep analytics and machine learning capabilities to drive greater efficiency across our business. With AWS, we are optimizing our product innovation processes to deliver premium consumer experiences wherever and whenever our customers choose to engage our brand.” ,” said Under Armour Chief Technology Officer Danny Miles.

May 2019

Under Armour Digital Customer Experience Running

Under Armour combines its physical and digital products to help its customers achieve their fitness goals. Under Armour started out as a wholesale apparel provider and is transforming itself into a digital business that uses data to help customers achieve their fitness goals. Paul Fipps, chief digital officer, and T.J. Graven, senior vice president of Global IT, walk us through the cultural, technical, and business model changes that made their transformation possible.

What is Under Armour’s digital strategy?

“For the last couple of years, our strategy has been to put the consumer at the center of everything we do: How are we engaging customers? What do they see as our core strengths? How do we deliver immersive experiences? What is their relationship with our brand?” Paul Fipps, Chief Digital Officer, Under Armour

Under Armour Digital Customer Experience

“Our digital transformation is also fueled by a complete modernization of our systems to an omni-channel model. When we first implemented an ERP in 2005, we were a $250 million domestic wholesale apparel company. In 2015, we were a $4 billion global retail company with multiple channels, so we re-platformed the entire company on SAP HANA, reduced our own data center footprint, and moved to an agile development model.” - T.J. Graven, SVP of Global IT, Under Armour

How is Under Armour changing the culture in IT?

T.J. Graven SVP of Global IT Under Armour

“Traditionally, a business leader comes to the IT leader and says, “I want to implement an asset management tool and I used to use this technology and it worked great. Can I have it?” We are working hard to change the conversation. Don’t bring me tool suggestions. Let’s talk about the business impact we are trying to achieve. Are we trying to grow revenue in retail? Are we looking for efficiencies in financial processes? If we start with business impact, we get less complicated solutions faster.”- T.J. Graven, SVP of Global IT, Under Armour

Colin Browne Interim CEO of Under Armour

"We are taking the time to assess where we're at and where we need to be and how we want to reposition ourselves for more significant top-line growth in years to come. To be clear, our foundation is strong. Our expense base has been reset and our P&L is primed and ready, and capable of greater productivity as we work to invigorate the top-line. This is about taking our existing core business strategy and amplifying it, scaling our ability more effectively across our direct-to-consumer, international, women's and our footwear businesses. This is about strengthening our innovation engine to deliver products and experiences that inspire and serve athletes better. Next, and simultaneous to amplifying our core, we're also working to identify new ways – identifying new ways to accelerate broader consideration for the Under Armour brand. We are confident that we are respected as an authentic performance brand capable of empowering an athlete's journey as they train, compete, and recover.”
