Walmart call center opens in Springdale

  • Nabholz Construction Corp. of Rogers used a building permit valued at $11.8 million to complete the redesign.
  • A site in Hattiesburg, Miss. was open for 12 years until the retailer closed it in September 2016 to centralize all call center operations in Bentonville.
  • The new call center is dubbed the Walmart Contact Center by the company.


Walmart tops US online grocery market

  • Walmart has 62% more customers than next nearest rival Instacart.
  • The nationwide retailer today offers grocery pickup and delivery in nearly every U.S. state.
  • Peapod and Amazon Prime Now are also competitors.


Walmart is building out its tech team to take on Amazon

  • The company acquired Kosmix in 2011, and used the remaining hires from Kosmix to start building out a new division called Walmart Labs.
  • Marc Lore, founder of Jet.com, which Walmart acquired in 2016, now oversees the company’s U.S. e-commerce operations.
  • Walmart’s chief information officer has been overseeing the launch of a joint engineering office with Microsoft, where the two companies develop internal apps.


Walmart to expand in-store tech, including Pickup Towers for online orders and robots

  • Built in partnership with Brain Corp., Walmart said in December it planned to deploy 360 floor-cleaning robots by the end of January 2019.
  • It’s now bumping that rollout to include 1,500 more this year, bringing the total deployment to 1,860.
  • The company is also adding 300 more Auto-S shelf scanners produced by California-based Bossa Nova Robotics.


Walmart’s new Spark Delivery service is an Uber-like platform for groceries

  • Walmart has partnered with a delivery logistics company called Bringg to help it improve and further build out its last-mile delivery, primarily for groceries and household goods.
  • Walmart has since ended its deals with Uber and Lyft in May, but it added Atlanta via DoorDash in April and Southern California via Postmates in July.


Walmart is innovating with technology including mobile upgrades, robots, automation, and online shopping

  • Walmart rolls out integrated store maps, now in 165 locations.
  • The company introduces Jetblack, Walmart's new concierge shopping service.
  • Walmart has automated the process of unloading trucks and sorting inventory with “Fast Unloader.”


Workday lands massive Walmart contract

  • Walmart has purchased a subscription to Workday's Human Capital Management, Recruiting, Learning, and Planning products.
