One way to eliminate hallucinations from your strategic account research
Most people still ask AI to "build an account plan" with nothing more than a company name and a vague prompt, then act surprised when it hallucinates. You can't afford that in a strategic account plan. What happens when you act on made-up information and reach out to an executive about an initiative that doesn't actually exist?
If you want AI to actually help you crack a must-win Fortune 1000 logo, start before you even open the tool. Build a real dataset around the account first.
1. Core company and financials
Pull the latest 10-K and 10-Q, recent 8-Ks for major events like acquisitions, divestitures, leadership changes, or big customer wins, the sustainability or ESG report, and the most recent earnings call transcript.
2. Strategy, initiatives, and signals
Grab investor presentations and analyst days, press releases covering product launches, restructurings, and big bets, and job descriptions in the key orgs, sales, IT, data, operations, product, since they're loaded with priorities and tech clues most people skip over.
3. Tech and spend picture
Map the tech stack, IT vendors and products you can reasonably confirm, plus estimated IT budgets: total spend and a directional breakdown across cloud, data, security, and the rest.
4. People map
Get the executive leadership team and board of directors, a working contact list for the relevant lines of business and regions, and the senior owners of whatever initiatives you actually care about.
5. Your own company's story, in one place
Consolidate a single mega-deck or PDF, 300 to 400 pages, that pulls together your own people in sales, marketing, product marketing, and engineering, plus leadership and board; your channel ecosystem of VARs, resellers, MSPs, and outsourcers where relevant; and your top 5 competitors with a clear read on where each is strong and where each is weak.
6. Links AI can actually use
If your AI tool can browse or work with URLs, have these ready: the investor relations page, the careers/jobs page, the executive leadership or board page, and the customers or case studies page.
Only after all of that do you start prompting. Not "build me an account plan for ACME." Instead: "given the 10-K, earnings call, ESG report, job descriptions, tech stack notes, and these case studies, summarize ACME's top 3 strategic priorities, likely buying centers, and 3 concrete sales plays we could run into this account."
That's the actual mechanism for eliminating hallucinations from strategic account research: you force AI to work inside a high-quality, curated data pack instead of inventing facts from thin air.
If you're doing this yourself, this checklist alone will get you better, more accurate outputs and a real account plan instead of pretty fiction. And if you're looking at all of this thinking "I don't have that kind of time," that's exactly where Databahn fits: we do this research and consolidation for you, so you can skip straight to building pipeline in your greenfield and whitespace Fortune 1000 accounts.
If you'd like to see what this looks like for one of your must-win logos, connect with me on LinkedIn and DM the company name, and I'll walk you through how I'd approach it.
